Building a better following on Instagram for your salon.

Instagram is great. It’s taken over our lives. We’ve had to limit it’s use at the stylistpop.com offices, there are only so many food truck pictures that you should take (Adam, we’re talking about you.)

But did you know that you can take advantage of Instagram to market your brand?

It’s been said that Instagram provides brands with 25% more engagement over other social networks like Facebook & Twitter.

That being said, there is a right way to use it, and a wrong way to use it. This post will help you learn the top techniques to help you build a big & engaged Instagram following.

 

1. Create a separate business Instagram

Look. I get it. It’s a huge pain to switch between multiple Instagram accounts, but you really need to create a separate Instagram account for your salon business. This will not only allow you to make sure your messaging is consistent, but also allow you to really showcase how you are and what you can do.

 

2. Make sure to #Usethebesthashtags

Hashtags are used to help people searching Instagram for specific terms  so it’s smart to use relevant hashtags when you post a photo.

So what hashtags should you use?

It’s easy to fall into the trap of using the most popular hashtags like; #love #me #tbt #follow #cute etc. But remember we’re trying to use the RIGHT hashtags to generate more local followers and likes from local people in the community.

Here’s an example of good hashtags to use for an eyelash extension artist:

#lashbrandname #eyelashextensions #lashes #lashesbybrandname #beauty #selfie

 (Make sure to use location specific hashtags as well)

#Sacramento #SacramentoEyelashExtensions #SacramentoLashes

Tip – Instagram let’s you use a max of 30 hashtags per post, so make sure you’re taking full advantage and using the best possible terms for your business.

Extra Tip – If you feel like you wasted a bunch of time by not using this keyword strategy on old posts, don’t worry. You can still go back and post a comment with your new hashtag keywords.

 

3. Get super shady & steal your competitors followers

The internet is full of grey areas, and this is one of them. Yea it’s super shady to take your competitors hard earned followers, but whatev – they’d do it to you.

So how do you steal their followers?

It’s easy, just find & flirt with them. The more work you put into it the more followers you’ll get.

Here’s how to flirt on Instagram:

  • Follow a user
  • Like on of their photos
  • Comment on one of their photos

Simple right? You’ve been stalking people on Instagram since it started so this shouldn’t be a problem for you :-).

But remember the more you put into it the better the results.

 

4. #SalonSelfies are your friend

This is possibly the best way to really gain followers in your area.

It’s time to become the local superstar that you are. It’s no secret client’s want to take a selfie right after you’ve finished their hair.

This #salonselfie will show up on all of their friends feeds, most liklely most of their friends are local and are looking for an awesome hair stylist.

Encourage your client’s to show off their new look, and to tag you in the process. This is a much more engaging ‘social proof’ review then anything on yelp.

 

5. What should I post?

You already know this, but no one wants to be bombarded with the same pictures or stale content every single day. Make sure you switch it up but always keep it relevant with your business.

Decide on your voice. Are you funny, cute, crazy. Let your Instagram followers get to know you and get to know how awesome you are.

Here’s a few things you should be posting.

  • Portfolio pictures
  • Specials
  • Before & afters
  • Funny meme’s
  • Testimonials
  • Pictures of your open spots on your schedule

Keep in mind, numbers matter, but only kind of. It’s more important to stay real and social. If you use Instagram correctly, you can help further your brand and lead a stream of happy customers to your chair.
